A community mentoring program at Sand Hill-Venable Elementary and Enka Intermediate Schools
Located directly across the street from Acton UMC, we began partnering with Sand Hill-Venable Elementary School in early 2010. Based on a desire to positively impact the lives of children and the needs of school counseling staff for adults willing to invest in students who needed extra attention and learning development, we began recruiting volunteers from our congregation and the neighboring community.
Volunteers spend 30 – 45 min. each week during school hours working with at least one student on reading, writing, or occasional special projects. Ideally, mentors work with the same student from K – 6th grade or beyond creating a lifelong bond.
With a beginning cohort of 9 volunteers, IBIY continues to recruit mentors coordinated by the school counselors and Acton member Peggy Drane. If you’d like to be part of this wonderful ministry, please contact Peggy via email peggydrane@bellsouth.net.
