Most of us only like mysteries we can solve. Perhaps, we will tolerate a mystery that only slightly disturbs the status quo. Unfortunately, the Trinity confounds these categories. This is especially true when we account for the Holy Spirit. Unlike the Father and the Son, the Spirit refuses containment. We cannot theologize, rationalize or even spiritualize our way out of the Spirit’s activity. Instead, we must harness it. Apart from the Spirit, we will never love the Father or the Son. Without it, we stay stuck in our own ways of doing things. Like a sailor on a ship needs wind, we need the Spirit. It pushes us into grand adventures. It opens us to new possibilities. But it also changes us and our world. When we truly embrace this mystery, we stop looking for answers. Instead, we enjoy the ride.
