The church of yesterday cannot be the church of today. But this doesn’t mean we have to abandon all our past. In Jesus’ parables, he suggests that trying to make the old new requires more than patchwork. We can’t just slap on a new slogan or a fresh program and expect that all will be well. Instead, the work of making us new is painstaking, slow, and tedious … but necessary, transforming, and powerful. The church of yesterday cannot be the church of today. And the church of today will not be the church of tomorrow. But if we are faithful, we will continue to be the church through the ages. Thanks be to God!
