“It’s easy to make a promise – it’s hard work to keep it.” – Boris Johnson This quote embodies a truth we know all too well. Most of us make easy, off-hand promises all the time. “I’ll call.” We never call. “We’ll get together soon.” Soon never seems to come. As a result, we often take our deeper commitments less seriously. Further, we tend not to trust the promises made to us.
For people of faith, promises are the foundation of our belief. These are all from the same source, God. But unlike us, God always keeps a promise. We, on the other hand, do not often trust this to be true. This is especially the case when it takes a long time for God to act on God’s promise. When this happens, we take it upon ourselves to accomplish God’s outcome our way. But the outcome is always disastrous. Still, God remains with us and uses our impatience and failure to move us closer to the desired goal.
In the end, God wants a relationship with us. God wants us to trust God. But the question remains, will we?
