We usually identify someone by what they do. One of the first questions asked in any social setting is, “What do you do for a living?” This is not unlike Jesus’ teaching about identifying a person’s true character. The best way to know a plant is by its fruit, so too with people. As poet Maya Angelou wrote, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” Yet when it comes to our life of faith, we often focus more on what we say than what we make. Jesus suggests the opposite.
