For most people, the birth of a baby is joyous thing. But even for the most hopeful and prepared, it can also bring anxiety and fear. This is no less true for the teenage mother of Jesus. Though unmarried and pregnant, she recognizes that the child she bears is special. Not just a regular baby, this child will bring a joy and peace that last beyond the day of his birth. He will right wrongs and restore a just order to the world. He will overthrow the powerful and raise up the weak. In this promise and with this faith, Mary proclaims, “Let it be with me.” May we respond the same way.
