When it comes to good news, most of us are suspicious. This is especially true when the same good news that applies to us applies to those we don’t like. So instead of sharing the good news, we hoard it for ourselves. As a result, we exclude others who might also benefit from it. This is precisely why Jesus chooses fishermen to take the good news of God’s kingdom to the world. Stinky, callous-handed, hard-working people who mostly live day-to-day, fishermen know the value this news has to others like them. They also know that those they are after will require patience, commitment, and the right tools to catch. The call of disciples of Jesus has not changed. We still have to acknowledge our own broken, stinky, day-to-day existence and take the good news of our rescue to others. Let’s go fishing!
