Humans are social beings. At a very young age, we sort ourselves into groups. Age, gender, or ethnic background make common groupings. Sometimes, we gather around a common interest. Regularly, religious groups find themselves in conflict. Whether doctrinal or practical, such conflicts lead to “in” versus “out” labels. But Jesus suggests this divide may not be as clear as we think. Instead, he calls us to lives of compassion and devoted service. Ultimately, this is a heart condition. When we follow Jesus the shepherd, we become caring sheep. But we also find we need each other for this life, no matter with whom we group.
