Who are the people of God? This question is one that practitioners and scholars alike have debated for years. Historically, the answer has hinged on particular ethnic background or agreement with particular beliefs. However, scripture and the coming of Christ tell a different story. Not part of the religious elite, or even Jews, the wise men know better than others that God is up to something in Jesus’ birth. But instead of seeing them as beacons, these outsiders inspire fear. Often, those “inside” the church believe they have it all or mostly figured out. But, sometimes the people “outside” the church are the people who understand the gospel best. They are more open to a strange light. They are more willing to follow the promise of a changed life. These “strangers” sometimes act more like God’s friends and are more open to God’s ways than we think.
