We rarely appreciate prophets in the flesh. Usually, their message includes harsh condemnation for things we’d rather they didn’t point out. They also often come from unexpected places. John the Baptist is one such prophet. But unlike those before him, John sees what he prophesies come to pass. When Jesus approaches him for baptism, it isn’t confession in the sense of admitting wrong doing. Rather, God professes that John speaks God’s word. God also gives us a word to speak to others. It is a promise and a hope revealed in Jesus Christ. We must proclaim it or it will spoil and rot around us until we die.
