Most of us are not particularly fond of rules. They restrict our ability to do what we want. And in general, rules represent the anti-thesis of fun. It should come as no surprise then that Christians often struggle with rules. After all, if human standards are tough, how much tougher are God’s standards? This can often lead people both inside and outside the church to view our common life as oppressive rather than freeing. But God’s desire for us is anything but enslaving us. God doesn’t want robotic drones. God wants children. And modeling excellent parenting, God establishes rules to help us be the best children possible. Far from oppressive, however, these rules are part of a larger relationship. God demonstrates how deep love really goes. That even though we continues to rebel, God continues to work for salvation and reconciliation.
